History of Milford Builders Merchants
Milford Ltd. started trading in 1979 as a wholly owned subsidiary of Harris Aggregates Ltd, who still are quarry owners and aggregate suppliers throughout Yorkshire. The original Milford site was at Cardigan Road, but only around one third of the current size and the original five employees worked out of a portacabin office with one Romney style storage building, one second hand Leyland truck, a second hand Sherpa van and one forklift.
The Company grew steadily throughout the 1980’s and moved into lightside products and then timber – the intention being to provide the customer with a “one stop shop” for all requirements.
The Cardigan Road site expanded over the years as additional land was acquired and new storage and office buildings were constructed. The delivery fleet expanded steadily as indeed did the number of employees.
In 1997 a second yard was acquired at Skinner Lane, Leeds and this has proved to be a successful addition to the operation.
By 2009, after 30 years of trading, the Company has two substantial yards, five HGV delivery trucks with crane offload, and forty five employees.
During this time the management team has remained constant and the six senior members of the management team have an average of over 25 years service with the Company. This represents a huge wealth of knowledge and experience and we believe shows the success of the philosophy of Milford Ltd. as clearly as does the financial success achieved.
Milford Builders Merchants are proud to have become the largest independent merchant in the Leeds area and are committed to continuing to offer our customers a service second to none at very competitive prices.
